Many people are never given an opportunity to develop
themselves as leaders. Here in Nevada,
however, we have nearly 200 motivated individuals (and teenagers at that) who
have been able to participate in a couple of trainings to better develop
themselves as leaders in their schools and communities. The two trainings that
were offered were the Zone Officer Training and the Greenhand Conference, both
held in Fallon, Nev. on September 21, 2009.
The Zone Officer Training (ZOT) was held at the Churchill
County Extension Office. With the 2009-2010 Nevada FFA theme being ROCK FFA
(Responsibility, Opportunity, Character and
Knowledge through the FFA), the State Officers decided to use this theme for
inspiration of the FFA Mine for the ZOT training. With plastic hard hats,
posters of wooden hand carts, and golden nuggets, the Nevada State FFA Officers
and the Zone Officers in attendance went to work. Conference attendees explored
the topics of communication, leadership and accountability, and the importance
of planning and prioritizing. They also worked with each other to develop
systems in which they could work together throughout the year. At the end of
their shifts, the 15 Zone Officers representing nine Nevada FFA chapters, were
presented with awards. These are the active members that play a very important
role in establishing the strength and structure of Nevada Agriculture
Education.
One hundred forty two freshmen and sophomores attending the Greenhand
Conference experienced one of the most exciting and energetic conferences
possible. Students were put to work in their own construction-themed conference
to learn a little bit about the FFA as well as personal leadership goals and
responsibilities. Students mingled with others from around the state while
participating in relay races and many types of personal growth type games. The
Nevada FFA Association and its chapters are excited to see what these new FFA
members bring to them as the year kicks off with a great start.
The Greenhand Conference is designed specifically for freshmen and first year sophomores. Students learn about the opportunities Nevada Agriculture Education and FFA can offer them throughout high school.
The Zone Officer Training (ZOT) is conducted for the zone officers who were selected at the annual Summer Leadership Camp. Besides general leadership concepts, the training also teaches the officers about preparing for the zone competitions. The state officers conduct the training.
The Nevada State FFA Association is a resource and support
organization that does not select, control
or supervise local chapter or individual member activities
except as expressly provided for in the state
FFA constitution, bylaws or policies.
