Summer Leadership Camp &
Chapter Officer Leadership Training
June 21-24, 2010, South Lake Tahoe
2010 Camp Highlights & Pictures
Many high school students think of
summer vacation as a time to kick back, relax with friends, and take some time
off from learning. However, in the Nevada
FFA Association, 170 of the best high school students enrolled in agricultural
education kicked off the first few days of summer in a different way.
June 21, 2010, the first official
day of summer, marked the beginning of the 2010 Nevada FFA Summer Leadership
Camp at the state 4-H Camp on Lake Tahoe. Summer Leadership Camp, or SLC, was a
star-studded event as the 2010-2011 State Officers unveiled the year’s theme of
“Reach for the Stars” and added a Hollywoodtwist to the camp activities. Chapter
officers from 14 different chapters, along with chapter members ranging in age
from 14-18, attended Summer Leadership Camp as VIP’s on the fast track to
becoming better leaders.
The first day of camp began with a
welcome from our newly elected State Officer team and then members began
building their leadership capacity with Chapter Officer Leadership Training
(COLT) and Past-State Officer workshops.
One main focus of SLC is to prepare newly elected chapter officers to
lead their chapters in their various roles and they do this by learning about
duties of their respective offices in COLT.
Members also met with their respective color groups for the week where
they would learn to become good friends with the other members and the State
Officer who was leading the color group.
For those brave enough, Lake Tahoe offered a very chilly cool down after a day in the sun running around and
competing in events such as the Tug-of-War, egg toss, and water balloon elbow
pass in the annual “Tahoe Extreme” competition between color groups.
One highlight for the entire camp
was hearing from the Nevada Air National Guard’s Colonel Bart O’Toole as he
explained his future mission to Afghanistan. Colonel O’Toole along with over 60 other
members from the Nevada Air National Guard have formed a team known as an Agribusiness
Development Team (ADT) to travel to Afghanistan to teach local Afghani farmers
about sustainable agriculture. Colonel
O’Toole told the members, “…we can’t make enough bombs or bullets to get out of
Afghanistan. We have to farm our way out.” The Nevada FFA also kicked off a statewide
service project to help Colonel O’Toole and the Nevada ADT by supplying wooden
pencils, paper and candy to help build relations with the locals.
Summer Leadership Camp concluded on
June 24, 2010 with many new friends exchanging contact information to be able
to stay in touch throughout the year until the next conference. Everyone who was able to attend camp took the
first of many steps this year to develop their capacity as productive, service
oriented, and enthusiastic leaders. SLC
2010 really taught FFA members the power of service and the fact that anyone
can accomplish their goals when they “Reach for the Stars!”
One hundred sixty two students attended the 2009 Summer Leadership Camp and Chapter Officer Leadership Training on June 22-25. This year's state officers introduced their theme of "Rock FFA - Responsibilities, Opportunity, Character & Knowledge through FFA." Workshops related to the theme covered topics such as chapter officer roles, grade-level specific
activities,
and getting involved on all levels within the FFA. The camp also offered the
annual Tahoe Extreme, Tug-of-War Tournament, ropes course
and beach time. The zone officers were also selected during the event. By National Officer Candidate Jimmy Lotspeich

former state officer, Bart O’Toole, is headed to
Afghanistan in August with the Nevada Air Guard’s Agriculture Development
Team. He and others will be working with the local groups to improve
their agriculture production. He will be contacting the state officers
throughout his deployment to update them on their efforts and ways to get the
FFA involved. He will know more once he is in Afghanistan. One way
the FFA officers can help immediately is to kick off a pencil, sharpener, and
notepad drive at Summer Leadership Camp. The officers are asking chapters
and members to bring these items so we can send them with Bart. Thank you
