Students Help Community Get Fit
- 2008-2009 Grant
Students from Wells High School
learned about the health benefits a parcourse could have on their community. Through the grant, parcourse equipment was purchased. The students assembled the equipment in the construction management shop during the winter and then worked with the City to determine the best location for installation. High school students, teachers, and
community members worked together in the Spring to install the parcourse in a city park next to the high school. Pictures - One of the stations and students being recognized for their hardwork. The
partners who assisted in this project were City of Wells, Wells Auto & Hardware, LDS Church, Boy Scouts, Sage Senior Center, Johnson Landscaping, and numerous volunteers
Garden Brings Community Together - 2007-2008
& 2008-2009 Grant
Since
Gerlach is over 100 miles from Reno, the need for fresh
vegetables is important to the community. Teachers, community
members, and students began a community garden in 2007.
To further this endeavor, Gerlach High School applied for
a Learn and Serve Grant to build a greenhouse. The majority
of the school year (07-08) was devoted to planning and building
the greenhouse while students and teachers started plants.
The second year (08-09) the project focused more on using the greenhouse and community garden to develop lessons and projects for all grade levels. Students from kindergartners to high school seniors were
involved in the project. Pictures - High School students helped open the community garden up to the elementary students in the community. They also helped the elementary students carve pumpkins and present a lesson about counting and weights. Partners who assisted in the project were
USG, Nevada Cement, Black Rock Solar/Burning Man, Fernley
Electric, Washoe County Roads Dept., Courtney Rock and Transport,
Fernley Preservation Society, Pacific First Construction, Michelle Munson, Kevin Davis, Travis Stansky, and Carrie Cardon.

Students Put Safety First - 2008-2009
Grant
Carlin is a rural, mining town located on Interstate-80 and an hour from Elko where emergency services are available. There is a strong need for First Responder's within the community due to the location of the town. Interested students 16 and older took coursework to test to become a certified First Responder. Local community members assisted in training the students. These new First Responder's also provided trainings to underclassmen about how to respond to an
accident on the road near their school and on the Interstate. Pictured - Students simulate an accident in order for students to practice how to respond. The project's partners included
Carlin Volunteer Fire Dept., Fire Corporation, Police Dept., Great Basin College, Explorer Scout Post.
Students Help Improve Park - 2008-2009 Grant
Pioneer Park in Fallon has been in existence for several years but the high school students and Soroptimist decided to add something
for local kids and families. The park already had a softball field and a small grassy area. The construction students worked with partners to install a covered picnic area and playground equipment. Partners included the Soroptimist, City of Fallon, Churchill Community Coalition, Churchill County, and Center for Independent
Living.
